YAMAHA PIANOS GRACE THE 2000 NEWPORT MUSIC FESTIVAL

NEWPORT, RI (June 23, 2000)—Delightful sounds filled the summer air from July 7-23 as the opulent "summer cottages" of Newport came alive with chamber music in celebration of the 32nd International Season of the Newport Music Festival.

Yamaha pianos graced performance and rehearsal spaces alike, as more than 30,000 attendees enjoyed 62 events including 780 individual pieces of music with up to five concerts each day. The afternoons were dedicated to French composer Camille Saint-Saëns and his piano masterpieces. His five piano concerti were performed in two arrangements by an array of international pianists.

According to Newport Music Festival General Director Dr. Mark P. Malkovich III, there was something for everyone at this year’s festival. There was a children’s concert at First Beach; midnight concerts featuring pianist Juana Zayas, Carlo Grante and Frederic Chiu; concerts with box lunches alfresco; a gala dinner and concert at Rosecliff; and many other musical events.

In its 32-year history, the festival has presented more than 100 artists and ensembles in their American debuts. This year, the festival used CFIIIS concert grand pianos and Disklavier® pianos furnished by Yamaha Corporation of America. The concert venues were some of Newport’s most famous mansions: The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House, Belcourt Castle, Rosecliff and Ochre Court. A few performances also took place under tents and at sea aboard the cruiser Vista Jubilee.

The two-week event, which has been named for the second year in a row to the Cadogan Press’ "America’s Elite 1000 - The Ultimate List," began with a formal opening night gala concert on July 10, featuring Russian pianist Andrei Gavrilov. This year’s festival marked the North American debut of Welsh pianist Daniel Martyn Lewi, who performed an all-Bach program on July 16.
