A SAXOPHONE TRIPLE-THREAT: THE FERREIRAS OF HAYWARD
–Yamaha and Allegro Music Come Through With New Saxes for California Triplets–

Hayward (Calif.) High School music teacher Joel Jaffe with his students, the Ferreira triplets–Dan, Jeff and Matt–and their brand-new Yamaha saxophones: YAS-52, YTS-52 and YBS-52.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.–Dan, Jeff and Matt Ferreira, 15-year-old triplets from Hayward, Calif., are ready to blow. Saxophones, that is, thanks to their local Yamaha dealer, Allegro Music in Fremont, and Yamaha’s Jim Murphy. Their brand-new Yamaha YAS-52, YTS-52 and YBS-52 saxophones came in especially handy when the triplets arrived at the Hayward-La Honda Music Camp near Pescadero.

Jim Murphy, marketing and sales consultant for the Band & Orchestral Division of Yamaha Corporation of America, completed the set just in time for the triplets to head off to camp. By contacting Yamaha sales reps across the country, he located a YBS-52 for Matt in a music store on the east coast.

"It felt good to know the Ferreira boys, Hayward’s triple threat, had a great time at music camp thanks to Yamaha saxophones and the folks at Allegro Music," he commented.

In addition to taking private lessons, Dan, Jeff and Matt are members of the Hayward High Wind Ensemble, Drum Corps, Marching Band and Advanced Jazz Band as well as the East Bay Symphonic Band, an adult community band. Their teacher, Joel Jaffe, was there at Allegro Music to help them pick up their instruments. While in the seventh grade, the triplets formed a group of nine called New Winds and Some Rhythm, and performed big band and jazz music for community events, private parties and retirement homes. In February, Matt and Jeff traveled to Fresno as members of the state honor band.

Their recent triple saxophone upgrade was not the family’s first Yamaha purchase. In fact, the triplets are not the only musicians in the Ferreira family. Their father, Paul, is a percussionist, and sister Jennifer, 18, plays a Yamaha flute and piccolo. Now a high school graduate, Jennifer also attended Hayward-La Honda music camp, and will return there this summer as a counselor.

The Yamaha YAS-52 Intermediate E-flat Alto Saxophone, YTS-52 Intermediate B-flat Tenor Saxophone and YBS-52 Intermediate E-flat Baritone Saxophone all feature tilting-style B-flat spatula keys for comfort and quick response, key shapes designed from the player’s perspective for maximum comfort, adjustable thumb rests, adjustable key guard felts, tapered pivot screws, a unique front F mechanism that permits independent adjustment to match the player’s style, a high F-sharp key for easier playability in the extended range high harmonics and a clear baked epoxy lacquer finish. The YBS-52 adds a three-vent octave mechanism to eliminate fuzzy, unclear tones when playing G, G-sharp and A with the octave key, and the YTS-52 sports a professional bore design.
