YAMAHA PM1D DIGITAL CONSOLE JOINS CAST OF HYPERION THEATER

NEW YORK (November 30, 2001)— The Hyperion Theater, a 2000-seat venue in the new Disney's California Adventure park, has taken delivery of a Yamaha PM1D Digital Audio Mixing System for the front of house area.

The Hyperion Theater's Yamaha PM1D digital console helps to run an ongoing revue show, special music artists, and even award ceremonies, simultaneously.

The 55-acre, $1.4 billion theme park, located directly across from Disneyland® park at the Disneyland® Resort in Anaheim (CA), has been designed to give the impression of stepping into a "three-dimensional postcard" of the Golden State. Three unique areas carry visitors through the landscape, history and culture of the state: a beachfront boardwalk at Paradise Pier, the great outdoors in the Golden State Districts and the magic of the movies in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot. Patterned after a historic Los Angeles movie palace, the Hyperion Theater is the centerpiece of the Backlot, boasting early 20th Century architectural details and a 21st Century sound system.

Audio systems for the Hyperion Theater were specified and designed by David Hatmaker, technical director for Disney's California Adventure, with Disneyland Entertainment Division supplying performance criteria for the theater. The facility's infrastructure supports a permanent running show, plus the ability to carry additional shows and special events.

"The theater required equipment that could run an ongoing 'revue'-type show, special music artists, and award ceremonies simultaneously," notes Hatmaker. "The PM1D could meet those needs with its automation features, built-in processing and recall functions."

The Hyperion's interior consists of a main floor and two balconies, with the PM1D acting as "command central" for control of the main PA (a cluster of 9 EAW KF861 3-way virtual line array cabinets) and the surround systems on each level (EAW CR58 2-way "cinema" surround cabinets). Clusters are true L-C-R, with speakers driven by Crown MA-5002VZ and MA-2402 amplifiers. Each amplifier is outfitted with a Crown IQ-PIP DSP card, model USP2.

A Tascam MX2424 hard disk system, with a second unit acting as backup, runs the musical revue. Up to 17 tracks are being utilized on each MX2424, and all being run on SMPTE. A separate DATATON show controller handles video and provides master time code source. The PM1D takes its cues from SMPTE, and the drives are locked to SMPTE.
