WORLD'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL PIANO 'E' COMPETITION ANNOUNCES FIELD OF SIXTY COMPETITORS

—Young Artists from Twenty Countries Will Use Disklavier Technology To Perform Live Over the Web for Judges Overseas—

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (May 9, 2002)—Sixty of the world's top young piano artists, from twenty countries, will make up the field for the first International Piano-e-Competition in Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN in June.

Seven participants in the first piano competition to be carried live on the Internet will be Americans. Other nationalities with major representation include Russia and Korea with eight participants each, Canada with six, Israel and China with five each, and Japan with four. (A complete list of participants can be viewed below.)

"This field of competitors represents exactly what we envisioned when we created this unique format," says competition founder, president and artistic director Alexander Braginsky. "For two weeks this June, the Twin Cities will truly be the focal point of the piano world."

The International Piano-e-Competition blends ancient art, modern technology and world-class artistry through the use of Yamaha Disklavier technology. Outfitted with this system, the Yamaha CFIIIS nine-foot concert grand piano used during the competition finals will transmit performances as MIDI computer data around the world through the Internet. Similarly-equipped Yamaha pianos at select piano centers around the world will recreate each performance live, note-for-note—their keys and pedals moving up and down, capturing every nuance of the original performance—and other MIDI devices will be able to reproduce the sounds as well.

In addition to members of the public, who may watch and listen over the web at www.piano-e-competition.com to follow the performances, two of the competition's nine esteemed judges will evaluate the performances from abroad using the same technology, making it truly an International Piano-e-Competition.

Contestants will vie against one another for a First Prize of $25,000. In addition to the cash award, the First Prize winner will receive a Spring 2003 debut recital at New York's Alice Tully Hall, a CD release on the Ten Thousand Lakes label, and a Yamaha DC3A 6'1" Disklavier polished ebony grand piano. Other top finishers will receive cash prizes as well, and the best performance of the Schubert Sonata will net one performer an additional $1,500.

Acclaimed pianists Emmanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman will serve as the competition's remote "e-judges" from Tokyo, Japan. They will be joined by onsite judges Fou T'Song, Ralf Gothoni, Sergio Perticaroli, Abbey Simon, Sontraud Speidel, Dubravka Tom_ic and Dmitri Bashkirov.

The event, organized by Minneapolis-based Musicians in Debut International, is sponsored by, Hamline University, the Grand Hotel Minneapolis, Minnesota Public Radio, Minnesota Monthly, the Minneapolis Star and Tribune and Yamaha Corporation of America, with participation by Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, The Rosalyra Quartet, The Schubert Club, The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Murry Sidlin.
